Harvard Referencing Guide: Complete Tutorial for Students

Harvard referencing (also called author-date referencing) is one of the most commonly used citation styles in universities, particularly in the UK, Australia, and Europe. This guide covers everything you need to know.

How Harvard Referencing Works

Harvard uses two components: in-text citations (within your essay) and a reference list (at the end). The in-text citation gives the author and year, while the reference list provides full publication details.

In-Text Citations

Single Author

  • Parenthetical: (Smith, 2023)
  • Narrative: Smith (2023) argues that...

Two Authors

  • (Smith and Jones, 2023)

Three or More Authors

  • (Smith et al., 2023)

Direct Quotes

  • Include page number: (Smith, 2023, p. 45)
  • Quotes over 40 words → block quote format

Multiple Sources

  • Separate with semicolons: (Smith, 2023; Jones, 2022)
  • Order chronologically within parentheses

Reference List Examples

Book

Smith, J. (2023) Title of the Book. 2nd edn. London: Publisher Name.

Journal Article

Smith, J. and Jones, A. (2023) 'Title of article', Journal Name, 15(2), pp. 100–115. doi:10.1000/xyz123.

Website

Smith, J. (2023) Title of web page. Available at: https://example.com (Accessed: 15 February 2026).

Edited Book Chapter

Smith, J. (2023) 'Chapter title', in Jones, A. (ed.) Book Title. London: Publisher, pp. 50–75.

Key Differences: Harvard vs APA

  • Harvard uses "and" — APA uses "&" in parenthetical citations
  • Harvard uses single quotes for article titles — APA uses no quotes
  • Harvard capitalizes all major words in titles — APA only capitalizes first word
  • Harvard includes "Available at" for URLs — APA does not

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Forgetting to include accessed date for websites
  • ❌ Using "&" instead of "and" (that's APA, not Harvard)
  • ❌ Not italicizing book and journal titles
  • ❌ Inconsistent capitalization in reference list
  • ❌ Missing page numbers on direct quotes
